Desert Landscape

“I’m 80% sure that it is this way” Josephine says while the sweat drips down her face. I have been friends with her for all my life. She was always crazy, but this was the craziest one yet!
“80%! 80 percent is not good enough! You brought us out here! I can’t believe I trusted you.” I reply                         “Hallie, I know where I’m going!” She screams.                                                                                                                           We were meant to be on a trip! A desert ride. But of course Josephine wanted to go leave the tour group and have a look for herself. Its been 3 hours. We are lost.

ASL Genius Hour

For my Genius Hour I researched ASL (American Sign Language). I chose this because I found the concept of communicating with hands very interesting. I also chose it because of a T.V show called ‘Switched at birth’. It was about two girls who got switched at birth. But, one of them is deaf. So, she needs to communicate in sign language with her friends. This is one of the first times I saw people sign. It was just very intriguing. I learned the history of ASL and also I learned a couple of words in sign. What I learned doesn’t really help a lot. But, if by any chance I meet a deaf person, I can have small conversations with them. I don’t now what my next genius hour will be about but, I hope its something that is helpful to not only me but others.

Problems that technology help with

There are many problems in this world that technology help with. One example that technology helps with is when you are stuck and need help with your homework or a question on a worksheet. You use the internet to expand
your knowledge as well as your vocabulary. You can also use internet to help cite sources for classes. For example in this school uses easy bib for social studies class. It is an easier way of citing sources than just doing it by hand. Another example is when you need to research for a class. Like when we researched videos and music for our mashup video. This is because with out it we will have to find it on our own in book or even take the videos on our own. The internet makes it way easier to do so. Also, another example is a lot of people like writing blogs and giving the world advice or maybe even writing about their day. This is because some people just need an activity that they can play or do to let time fly. Also, it helps with connecting the world. This is because now with the blogs a person in Australia can talk in a second with a person in Senegal. When we get older we will be using the internet a lot more. We will be able to find colleges much more easier and apply for them online instead of visiting it and apply to it on paper. These are some of the problems that technology can solve.

Senegal

Before I lived in Senegal, I lived in France. Last year was my first time in the continent Africa. Before coming here, I seriously didn’t know what to expect. I thought it was going to be fine. Now that I am here in Senegal I see that it is not that bad. There are some down sides for example, the mosquitos or even the absence of McDonalds. There are some upsides to Senegal like getting to know more about a new culture and also meet new people! There are not many places to go, but there are some fun ones. For example, Saly, Acrobaobab. This impacted my life because I feel like I am more open-minded to new activities and new cultures. Senegal is not what I expected but it is a great Country with  great culture. I think this will be a great experience.

Still I Rise

Maya Angelou

Some of Maya’s Poem

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise
